Joe Scordino is the Kiwanis Club of Edmonds’ Citizen of the Year for 2024.

“All I can say is that I’m humbled and honored to be chosen,” Scordino said.

Edmonds Stream Team Project Leader Scordino is a frequent contributor to the Beacon. He has also spoken out against the City of Edmonds’ comprehensive plan regarding housing and its possible impacts on the environment, including what he calls the demise of the city’s salmon streams.

Scordino, a retired National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries biologist, is among the forefront of Edmonds volunteers who advocates for the restoration of the Edmonds Marsh.

Scordino will be honored June 11 at the Edmonds Chamber Morning Buzz meeting at Edmonds Waterfront Center, and will be the grand marshal of the Edmonds Fourth of July parade on July 4.

Now in its 31st year, the award’s intent is to honor a person (or persons) who have contributed community services for the people of Edmonds.

The person may be a civic-minded citizen active in civic affairs, community activities, and/or business pursuits. It is open to individuals as volunteers or professionals in the line of duty.

The previous winner was Dr. Robert “Rob” Scarr.

Among previous winners are former Vietnam veteran and Fallen Heroes Project found Michael Reagan; former Police Chief Al Compaan; Dorothy Gross; Rick Steves; Edmonds Petanque Club; Edmonds Floretum Garden Club; Francine Cohen; Edmonds Food Bank director Casey Davis and volunteers; Bill and Carol Brayer; Mary Van Meter; Peggy Pritchard;  Laura Spehar; and Peggy Kennedy Olson.
