MCLG stands for Maximum Contaminant Level Goal, a non-enforceable public health target set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for contaminants in drinking water, representing the level with no known or anticipated adverse health effects, allowing for a safety margin. Unlike the legally enforceable MCL (Maximum Contaminant Level), MCLGs focus solely on health, ignoring treatment cost and technology limitations, meaning they can sometimes be set lower than what’s currently feasible.
